Science class Year 8"You need to be more firm, tell them what they need to do" "Give them more writing" "Don't forget to remind them of their safety protocol." "You need to connect better with students, be more confident and cheerful" "Don't look so stressed, students can pick up on that"
My mentor: FrankReflection: I realized the impact of teacher's appearance and facial expression on students. Due to the stress I was going through, I was not aware I was frowning most of the time. However this gave the students wrong signal, they could have believed that I was not happy teaching them which could have them disengaged or retaliate as a result.
Observing Year 7 All boys Science class" I can't hear you at the back, you might need to talk louder or get the students to sit closer." "You might need to cut down on the amount of notes you give them, they seem to be not writing after the second slide.... Maybe you can highlight important informations so they don't have to copy everything"
Fellow PST: TaraReflection: I didn't realize that my voice was soft thus I had to project my voice a lot more when delivering my lesson and giving instructions. I also cut down the Powerpoint slides to 5 important points for each period so the writing did not overwhelm students and cause disengagement.
Psychology class Year 11" Need to carry through with threat to keep students in" "You need to be more confident with how you deliver your class, you know your content, you just need to get more familiar with it and add a few more real life examples to help students grasp the concept."
My mentor: EmmaReflection: Despite reading the textbook everyday, I was still confused of how much content I needed to include as the VCAA's guideline was very vague. It was not until I got the SAC that i know the depth to teach. With the SAC, I was able to implement the Backwards design to structure my lessons and felt a lot more confident with my teaching.
Replacing Frank, Period 5 on Friday, Year 8 Science class" You did well, the class was in control and they were all very engaged" "You might want to work on keeping the noise level a little lower" [ I realised I made a mistake and skipped a portion of content in my lesson plan and I wanted feedback if the class made sense} "They really seem to enjoy the Kahoot" " I didnt notice any mistakes or gaps, I'm sure the students did not realize it either"
CRT: SarahReflection: I don't mind a loud class as they were passionately debating about the best renewable energy which is allowed in my classroom management plan. However I understand that other teachers may find this annoying and therefore in future, I could place students in smaller groups for group discussion.
